Siblings of children with disabilities may be challenged by their unique family role. They may experience feelings which are difficult to understand and manage. Some children place unrealistic expectations on themselves or misperceive what is required of them. Our sibling group is designed to explore their special role, providing support and education on how to better label, understand, and manage feelings and expectations.

Clinical Psychologist (PSY 15870)
Cost: $300.00 per child for six weekly one hour groups
$40.00 for an initial interview session with parent(s) is required prior to the first group in order to collect important information regarding each child.

Being the parent of a child with disabilities presents serious challenges and struggles which create anxiety and frustration for many families. The stress and pressure to manage a child’s difficult, exhausting behaviors can be overwhelming. These negative behaviors may present themselves during self-help tasks, when playing with peers, on outings, or with siblings. This parenting group is designed to provide parents with strategies, materials, and resources to manage difficult behaviors in different settings. Parents will learn how to analyze behaviors and create behavior plans. Topic areas include noncompliance, aggression, perseveration, and difficulty transitioning. We will also discuss strengths and positive behaviors, focusing on methods to increase and nurture these areas.

Does your child have difficulty initiating play or responding when approached by peers? Is it hard for him or her to take turns, follow along with activities, reciprocate during play, and/or understand the social rules? This social skills group is designed to help children with these social skills deficits and more. The children will experience and practice social skills situations during the group process enabling them to practice. It will teach tools which may be practiced and used in other social settings. Skills such as reading body language, problem-solving, communication, anger management, and decreasing anxiety will be addressed using specially designed activities and materials. This group will provide a safe, supportive environment for social skill building and aims to increase your child’s social confidence.
